About these worksheets

The 80 kanji a Japanese child learns in their first school year — numbers, nature and the body: 一 (one), 山 (mountain), 川 (river), 手 (hand), 目 (eye). They are the simplest characters in the language and the ones every later kanji is built from, which makes them the right place to start whatever your age. Stroke order matters most here: habits formed on 十 and 木 carry into every complex character that contains them.

How to use them

2. Click “Print / Save as PDF” to generate your sheet.
3. Print the sheet and practice yourself, or hand copies to your students in class.

Each row builds the character up one stroke at a time one after another, then gives a grey stencil to trace and blank squares to write it from memory.
